Meh.
Was a little disappointed with this, as I bought it believing it was illustrated by Coleman Engle (who illustrated the 'normal' SU comics). It was illustrated by a different artist I'm not familiar with, and the overall comic seems... amateurish at best. The art style jitters constantly, some panels have thick lines, others have thin. The action moments seem poorly constructed, and in one of the most action-packed moments of the comic the Crystal Gems look like blockly messes. It looks more akin to a fancomic than something released officially, and reads like one too. That said, this is coming from an artist who loves studying and deconstructing comics, and the artwork itself, while inconsistent, is for the most part very good.I was a little disappointed by this, the concept of Steven going to school could have been taken so much further, and I was hoping for more interaction between the gems and the school. It simply seems like an early season one episode that was scrapped and made into a comic - the potential for worldbuilding was replaced by a dull gem monster fight. It's worth it if you're a die-hard SU fan like myself, and I imagine any kids would love it, but if you're interested in the artistic merit or collectability of comics, maybe give this one for myself.
