Q: will they work on carpet?

YES, but only on their sides or back. They will go more slowly, but still fast enough, which is great as the less I work to coral them. The bugs on their feet are fast and love to dash under things or go quickly into dark places that are hard to get to. I have rugs, if I put the bug on the rug, on its side or back, it will move, they just go more slowly which is fast enough to keep my cat's attention very well. I have a play area with a large piece of brown paper that I wiggle toys under for kitty's hunting, to see the hex bug go there too, very interesting for them. Slower is good with these critters.
