An OK, but not Crait, set
As is far too often the case with LEGO's Star Wars set, lets get the obvious out of the way - Defence of Crait is horribly overpriced at full retail. Happily, Amazon have regularly discounted the set quite heavily in recent weeks and this make it more of an attractive proposition. For me, the issue is the content itself. The ski speeders featured in The Last Jedi just aren't particularly interesting - they are not a patch on the snowspeeders from The Empire Strikes Back on which their big scene appears to be based. In the film they are rather broken and completely ineffective against the First Order's walkers, so I don't know if there is a huge market for a model of them. Anyway, LEGO have made one and it's a pretty good recreation of the vehicle. There's a lot of grey but some nice coloured highlights and it's a sturdy craft. Even the lowering 'ski' is integrated well, I was expecting it to be more flimsy.Obviously, the scale of the ski speeder compared to LEGO's version of the heavy walkers it attacks on Crait is miles out, so playing with the two together requires some healthy imagination, but I can't really fault LEGO on this one as producing a walker to that scale is not realistic.Apart from the ski speeder, you also get a trench, rotating turret and a tower, complete with weapons. These represent the rest of the Resistance's hasty and paltry defences in the film. These models are actually more interesting than the speeder and are both fun to build and play with. They up the value of the whole set considerably, but not enough for the RRP.The included minfigures feature Poe Dameron, complete with his natty headset, General Ematt (who appears very briefly in the movie, but is exclusive to this set so may be sought after), and then a fairly bland Resistance solider and two First Order snowtroopers. A decent selection but nothing to get too excited about. For the discounted price of sub-£50, this set is worth picking up if you're a big fan. Otherwise, I'm not sure. Out of the Episode VIII range, it isn't the most essential, it's just OK.

Lots of detail and a satisfying build.
This is a resonably complex kit to build - not difficult especially, but it does require some careful reading of the instructions. Younger children would struggle with this one I think and need some adult help, but older builders will find it a satisfying set to construct. As always, there is tonnes of detail on the Ski Speeder and the base, and they look fantastic once complete. There is a generous number of minifigs to this set too, which is always nice - three rebel characters and two snowtroopers, complete with weapons. There are spring loaded guns on the Ski Speeder that seem to be rather overpowered and will easily fire a piece of plastic three or four metres, which may concern some.Build time is about three hours or so, but as there are really three kits in one here you don't need to build it all in one go to have something to show for you efforts. Great fun, and a great lego set.

A detailed and entertaining if rather pricey set. Be wary of the spring-loaded shooter.
This is certainly one for the die-hard Star Wars fans, and perhaps less-so for the more traditional LEGO fan who would value individual creativity and freedom than simply following a set of instructions to build a specific model. I tend to think of these sort of LEGO models more akin to an Airfix model, but with added little pieces such as the little men that can form part of other LEGO creations and imaginations. There are a lot of pieces, many of them quite small (and very few of them would I class as traditional ‘LEGO’) so it took a few hours to get it all put together. You have no choice but to follow the instructions, but they are simple enough to follow. The spring-loaded shooters are a novel addition but you need to take care who is using these as they could take someone’s eye out if you’re not careful.Overall, it’s a nice set with a decent number of figurines to go with it, but the price feels too heavy for my liking, and that will be purely down to the associated franchise. If you’re a die-hard fan of Star Wars though, this may be less of an issue.
