Q: How much is in the bag?

2 lbs or approx 5 cups which equals 1 1/4 quarts

Q: Does this soil need to be mixed with anything else, or does it work for bonsais solo?

This soil could be mixed with something else if you prefer that. It's main purpose is to provide adequate drainage and retain moisture. It does not , however, have any type of organic matter for the bonsai to consume as nutrients. So to help with that you can add slow-release organic fertilizer or you can mix compost into it, as well as other soil components depending on the type of tree.

Most bonsai trees prefer to live outdoors. If indoors it must be well ventilated and have sunlight. This soil works well on any tree, but is soft and must be changed every couple of years. Your plant may have to be checked more frequently for whether it needs water. I use skewer sticks put in the soil to check how moist the soil around the tree is, and water it as needed. I hope this helps.

It can be used as stand alone for most bonsai. If anything I would say the organic matter does not improve drainage. So I agree with the other comments that it might be beneficial to add pumice/lava rock. However, it all depends on the Bonsai.
