I've been creating and facilitating trainings for years but never stepped back to think about my formal process. I read Leanne's book in about two sittings because I just couldn't put it down. In under 200 pages, Leanne provides an incredibly clear, practical, and followable process for creating your workshops. Rather than brain dumps on a PowerPoint or making it up as you go, she provides concrete steps to take at each step of the creative process. I love how her tone is encouraging and fun. Leanne also shares with you template documents for her SPARK sheet and other forms that I've already found to be incredibly helpful in creating my newest classes. This book is geared more toward presenters who orchestrate business meetings and personnel training. I was looking for information regarding workshops in academic settings, so much of it did not apply to me. However, the advice was practical and thoroughly understandable.

Get ready to be inspired. I'm thrilled to have purchased the book and put Leanne's guide to developing non-boring workshops into practice.

I bought this book a couple of months back, and whilst its friendly and enticing cover has been tempting me from its place in my ‘to read’ pile (because my ‘currently reading’ pile is embarrassingly large) I was suddenly called on to assist in developing a training workshop so it went straight to the top of the pile- and it has been an absolute masterclass in efficient explanation, execution and inspiration from start to finish!First off: Length and readability. It’s 186 pages long from cover to cover (and you will want to read every single one). It’s so efficient you can read it in a few hours, though you will want to spend a bit longer to add multiple bookmarks on all the really useful tips and tricks, and to make notes of your own for when you will seek out a workshop opportunity in order to try out Leanne’s methods. It is also really easy to pick up and put down, move back and forth to remind yourself of earlier advice, and read in a busy environment.Next: Content and Structure. There is so much to love about the way Leanne balances teaching her framework, sharing context and examples, and giving practical exercises throughout this book- and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this is exactly what she advocates doing when you design your future workshop. From kick-off conversations and crafting a mission statement when designing your workshop, thinking about the pre-event communications and other things to set you up for success, to how to structure and flow of the content itself, close out the session and create the follow up activities afterwards- the full life-cycle of the workshop is covered in an engaging and practical way. Add to this the freebies, resource lists and follow up content to delve into and discover, and you have a really wonderful and unique package that is rare in some of the ‘guide’ books I have read, which can be so heavy on the theory that the practical advice is lost.Finally: putting it all into practice. I started reading this book on a Monday ahead of a design session for a training workshop on the Wednesday, and used Leanne’s framework to facilitate the creation of a detailed outline of the entire workshop - and some very happy stakeholders - by the end of the week. There is the small matter of delivering the final workshop to take care of, but I am confident that the preparations and the energy that has been created as a result of Leanne’s framework will stand us in great stead.If you want a fresh, energised and creative approach to designing and delivering a workshop then this blueprint guide is everything you can wish for!

This book is brilliant and exactly what any facilitator needs to create and design a 2 hour or even full-day workshop.I love the easy-to-follow framework and tips Leanne provides for each step.Even as an experienced facilitator, this book was very helpful in tweaking my workshops to land even better and create memorable experiences for my clients.Whether you are starting out as a facilitator, have to create workshops as part of your role occasionally or are an experienced facilitator, you will learn some practical and powerful strategies in this book.

As a pathological overthinking facilitator I greatly appreciated this book. It's short, straight-to-the-point and contains a much appreciated order of operations to design effective workshops in way less time than usual. I'm definitely going to apply the SPARK for my next workshops.This book is great even, and especially, if you are a fairly experienced facilitator, but still struggling with the design phase: embrace the SPARK framework and leave your overthinking aside.
