Self-priming pumps are a type of liquid pump that are designed to have the required liquid inside the pump body to start the pumping process. They are necessary if a pump has to be located above the level of the liquid to be pumped. Self-priming pumps work by: Being filled with the relevant fluid through a small port located on the pump body Triggering turbulence that allows the fluid to rise and “clear” the piping of air Evacuating air from the suction line, thereby drawing liquid into the pump Reverting to its normal pumping mode
