Useful Consumer Tool for Comparing Sound Levels
(This review is for the KENMIC Portable Digital Decibel Meter.)The main problem in getting an accurate sound level reading is whether or not the meter is calibrated to a known volume standard. Looking around Amazon at such calibration devices, you quickly see that most of them cost several times what the meter does. That being said, the ad promises accuracy to within ±1.5 dBA, which, if true, would probably be close enough for most consumer applications.I'm guessing most people will be using this meter to gauge noise that is at annoying or potentially dangerous levels. This meter will allow them to get a reasonably accurate reading, and to compare it to other common sound sources.I do find it curious that in one of the pictures in the ad, a boy is shown sleeping peacefully when the sound meter is measuring 12.5 dBA. That's interesting given that the ad also states the range of the meter is 35-130dBA. ;)

Handy tool to have
I'm an AV engineer and having this in my arsenal is good for checking noise levels in conference rooms. It helps to know how much noise HVAC units are adding to the atmosphere so we know where to place mics. This one is simple to use and fits right in my backpack.

A solid, and basic tool.
As others have mentioned, there is no way of knowing if this tool is calibrated, so I wouldn't trust that it is accurate to the degree it would be useful to a sound engineer, for example. The most common need I have for such a tool is to compare the sound levels from different devices or to measure changes in sound levels to a single device, for example, measuring the sound level from a device that has been repaired or had maintenance performed on it. I'm more interested in the magnitude of sound changes than the specific value of sound levels. For this sort of task, the tool is a very solid option, with simple operation and a clear, easy-to-read display. It offers excellent value with reasonable features for hobbyists or others with no need for certifiable, calibrated sound measurements.

Not too good
Didn't work at all one number doesn't even light up

Worked great...until it didn't
I was very pleased with this decibel meter. I used it to check the sound level of my 3d Printer lab and also my suppressors when at the range. It worked great and seemed to be pretty accurate. The build quality was on the lighter side but more than acceptable. I was going to leave a 5-star review, but sadly, it stopped working during a test of some of my power tools. It just will no longer turn on. Maybe it's just my bad luck or a rare issue, but it happened, so I have to note it in my review. YMMV.

Very easy to use sound level meter
Upon unboxing you are presented with the sound level meter, 3 x AAA batteries and a user's manual. The meter comes with a foam wind screen and a tripod mount on the bottom which allows you to mount it on a tripod in order to take long term readings. The meter has an on/off button which also turns the backlight on and off. There is a max/min button to display the highest and lowest sound levels. Press the MIN button and it locks in the lowest value. If the meter measures a lower level that what is locked in as MIN it will replace the previous value with the new lowest value. Press the max button and it locks in the current reading as the MAX value and if a louder level is measured it replaces the present locked in MAX value with the new value. In addition, there is a hold button to lock in a particular measurement and continue to display it until the hold button is pressed again The meter has a measuring range of 35dBA to 130dBA.The user's manual recommends calibrating the meter once a year. I don't have a sound generator that could do this so if I need to recalibrate it I will need to find someone who has a sound generator that can generate a standard sound source of 94dB @1KHz.The meter does not come with a storage case. It would have been nice to have some kind of semi-rigid storage case included.Overall, the meter appears to accurately measure sound levels. I can use it to check various sound levels in my environment to decide whether or not hearing protection is necessary. Recommended.RATING 4.5/5.0Priced at $24.99 at the time of this review.

Doesn't seem accurate
Detected high levels of noise with a quiet tv in the background. Says my cough is like 106dB.. Man i have loud coughs! Need hearing protection apparently. I don't think this is a very accurate meter at all. I tried comparing it to my phone using various free decibel meter apps and as an example the same room with a quiet tv in the background (same program and volume) is only 40-60dB on my phone apps vs 80s on this meter. My cough is about 81dB peak on the free apps vs 106dB on this meter. I was looking forward to using a proper decibel meter to reduce sounds to safer levels around my home and shop. I have tinnitus, so that's a good meter in itself. But, would really like to know accurate decibel levels.

Simple and accurate
The KENMIC 35-130dB(A) Decibel Meter is of decent build quality and works really well despite not having a mic cap.The meter has a simple interface focusing on its primary function, which I appreciate. There are no unnecessary temperature or humidity measurements that do not add value to the device. There are also no fast or slow display update options, but it strikes the optimal balance between fast and slow display update options, which I really like. It is comfortable to read while not too slow in display update. Job well done in eliminating one unnecessary button! While it is advertised to measure from 35 to 150, it can actually go down to 30 in a quiet home while the other meter I have does not go below 33 under the same environment. In addition, this meter also registered a higher reading on noisier input than the other one. The apparent dynamic range seems higher than the one I have, although I don’t have a good sound reference to comment on its absolute accuracy.Although the measurement repeatability is good, there is about a 1-3db discrepancy between the two meters depending on the level of the noise source. I find this acceptable for an inexpensive consumer product. The only issue I have is the lack of a mic cover, which can shorten the life of the meter.Priced below $30, I think this is a simple and useful sound meter to have. I am very happy with this acquisition and it will replace the slightly more expensive one I currently have.
