Does it work during the day?

No, it charges the battery by the sun during the day, but comes on from dusk to dawn NOT during the day. Hope that helps You

Does it have a rechargeable battery or do you throw away once they stop working?

The battery is solar powered and should last years. I don't think you can open it to replace the battery. BTW, it seems to be working great. We haven't seen a coyote in that area since we put it out.

does this flash in a random pattern, or on and off repeating the same?

I have two of them and they flash at a fairly constant rate of about 112 flashes per minute.

Anyone have success keeping racoons off your roof with theses??

I have not used these for that purpose. It was to put around a perimeter
