A little bit of work, but delicious
This is an 8 oz bag of in-shell dried longan fruit from Xlseafood. I've actually never had these before but I could see that they would be similar to lychee which I have had and enjoy very much. When it arrived I opened the bag, grabbed one, and cracked the shell. Inside was a dark brown, circular fruit. I put it in my mouth and started to bite down and the fruit layer was a bit thinner than I expected so I could hear the seed cracking. After that I was more careful and finished eating the piece of fruit, and spit out the seed. The fruit is very sweet and delicious. Since it is dried it's got a touch of that dried fruit taste that fruits like prunes and such have, but maintaining its own unique lychee-like flavor. I have included pictures of the longan with the shells on, one that has been opened and the fruit with the seed removed, and one where the seed has been separated from the fruit. The fortune cookie is for scale, it is a standard restaurant-style fortune cookie. The shells on these longan are very, very easy to open. After the first one, I've been opening the shells, rinsing off the fruit to remove any fragments etc., and then removing the fruit from the seed with my hands before eating. So while it is a little bit of a process, the fruit is very yummy and worth it. I will probably continue to eat these on their own, but I know there are some Chinese dishes where this dried fruit can be used and if one of them catches my fancy I may give it a try. I also have read that you can make a healthy tea with dried longan, which seems like it would be tasty. All in all, it has been really fun to try these, and I think they're delicious.

Good snack
The net amount of fruit is small once the shell and the seed are taken out of the way, but this is a pretty tasty snack. The package is well sealed and the product comes in decent shape. It is a bit expensive given the net amount, but it is made from an exotic fruit after all.

Interesting but a bit of work to eat
I am glad I read instructions on how to eat these first. The first couple, I whacked gently with a meat tenderizing hammer to crack open before I was able to just push my thumb through a shell on about the 3rd one. It takes a bit of practice to eat the fruit off the pit without crunching into the pit. I was trying to place the taste when I offered one to my spouse, who said it tasted like dates. These are nice for a light snack but I will also try infusing them in some gin for a cocktail.

Sweet!
I used to buy the already pitted dried longan to make Chinese dessert soups, until I watched a documentary where they made children work as child labor, and those children would put these fruits in their mouth to get the pit out. So gross! I stopped buying dried longan after. Then I saw these, still in their shells, that there's no way these had been in anyone's mouth, so I placed my order.Cracked open one, it was easy enough, I put one under a sheet of paper towel, just to make sure the shell wouldn't fly all over, and cracked it while holding it under the paper towel. The inside was dried sweet longan fruit. The pit itself was fragile as well, I heard cracking while I was biting into the fruit, it was the pit that I cracked.I don't mind having to crack the shells to retrieve the fruit inside at all. Now I know where I can get good sweet dried longan that haven't been in anyone's mouth!

Does taste a little like fresh longans.
The bag contains 8 oz of dried longans. Longans are normally eaten fresh in Asia. This is the first time I have tried longans that are dried. First you break the shell and then eat the flesh of the fruit. There is a seed in the center of the fruit which is not to be eaten. The flesh tastes sweet and does taste like the fresh fruit which I am used to. However, eating this fruit fresh is way better but fresh longans are not easy to find here. The dried version like this will probably be the best substitute.

Pods
These didn't have much meat inside of them to get a great taste.

Dried longan
I've never had Longan before so I really had no idea what to expect when I ordered these free dry longans. So if you are in the same boat and don't know what these are like, I will do my best to describe them. There is a very thin shell. Almost paper like that is easy to peel or break. Inside is the long gan which is kind of like a raisin. But inside the raisin is a pit that is almost the entire size of the raisin. One must be careful not to crack or swallow the pit, so it's a little bit of a learning curve to eat them. This entire package probably ends up with about as much fruit as a small box of raisins. The rest is shell and pit. I would say that it's a terrible value for such a small amount of fruit, but since this is an exotic fruit and I have no idea what the process is for procuring or drying them, I can't really say. But to be honest, I would not order these again because it is too much work for some a small amount of fruit.
