From Here to the Great Unknown: A Memoir

RE: Unexpectedly Raw
When I started the audiobook—I have the hardback for the pictures of course—I was a little skeptical. The stories LMP and her daughter include, shared in Riley’s voice and Julia Roberts standing in for LRP, are a little scattered and erratic, to the point that I wondered if I would finish. But the sadness and insight and addiction and parallels and yes, the celebrity, draw readers in. I mean, the stories about MJ alone are exciting, but not in a way that he or his story is betrayed. And then suddenly, the story concludes, gently, succinctly, and sadly. This book does an amazing job in illustrating how complex and confusing and beautiful and empowering and suffocating complex grief can be and often is, and how often we lean into it, honored to be consumed by it regardless of how dark, and how painful joy can feel, experiencing that after the loss of those we adore and always long for. I am so grateful to have leaned into this piece. Do yourself a favor and invest in the audiobook…listening to LMP, her voice and her words, is moving and startling and sad and, raw, especially when she asks what being strong has ever done for her.

Raw, mystical, and refreshingly honest.
I had no idea what to expect from this book. I knew Lisa Marie had died before her book could be completed, but having her daughter add her own words to fill in gaps was inspiring. Both voices in the book were tender and emotive. It was sad to read about a lot of things but enlightening as well. The words were lyrical and the grief thick as the story told about the chain of lives and lasting genetic and supernatural imprints. I felt honored to be given a behind the scenes look into a very complex, spiritual, and historical life. Being the daughter of an icon and legend who was way ahead of his time and birthed a genre of music that exists to this day was definitely a hard weight to carry. Lisa Marie was special and Riley is amazing. What a beautiful artistically written book. The family history will be well preserved by her.

Enjoyable Read
I was looking forward to reading From Here to the Great Unknown from the time its release date was announced. I became concerned when the first page (ebook edition) noted that Lisa Marie Presley's thoughts would be in one font and Riley Keough, Lisa's daughter who helped finish the memoir, would be in another font. The one sentence given to each example looked similar. As I continued reading, it became apparent. Not only did the font change, but there were also a couple of symbols to distinguish between each person. It is noted that Lisa Marie struggled for over ten years with writing her memoirs and only started making headway when Riley agreed to help her finish, just one month before her untimely death. Lisa Marie's portions were completed mostly from recorded interviews intended for the book.I got what I wanted from this memoir. Lisa Marie shared amazing stories of growing up on the grounds of Graceland and what it was like to have Elvis as her father. She touched on the day her father passed away and what it was like the days after. The time of her life that was discussed in pretty good detail was her dating, marrying, and eventual divorce from Michael Jackson. The MJ era and the death of Lisa Marie's son, Ben, is where Riley's contribution shines. She adds so much perspective and insight to how the kids felt about Lisa Marie's relationship with Michael and gives a lot of background on everything that went on after the death of Ben with her mother. From the sounds of it, Lisa Marie probably wouldn't have been able to be so forthcoming herself. It was still too raw for her.The one area I was disappointed with was Lisa Marie's relationship with Nicolas Cage, which was just glossed over. There was always the feeling that the huge Elvis Presley fan Cage just dated and married Lisa Marie to have the ultimate Elvis collectible, and maybe that's why it was glossed over. Riley's only mention was that he would always drive a different-colored Lamborghini whenever Cage came to their house. From Here to the Great Unknown was a quick rainy weekend read. Lisa Marie shares the good, bad, and ugly of her life. Riley does a great job of helping tell her mother's story.

Beautifully done
I just love this book and will read it again and again. It is done with bold print for Lisa and softer print for Riley....what a beautiful idea. It is chocked full of beautiful love stories. All different kinds of love and the pain that comes with intense love. The honesty in this book will blow you away. I felt like I was sitting next to Lisa and Riley as they spoke to me. Riley is a talented writer and a beautiful soul. The love between Danny Keough and LMP is unfailing and beautiful.

Hermosa pero triste!
Si a casi 50 años de su muerte Elvis sigue impactando la vida de millones de personas, devastador imaginar como impacto su perdida en la vida de su unica hija. “I felt my father could change the weather”… Son las primeras palabras de LM en este desgarrador relato. Compré el libro en físico, porque es uno de esos ejemplares que vale la pena tener, y lo leí junto con el audiolibro en el que Julia Roberts hace una soberbia lectura junto con Riley.

Brilliantly put together
I loved this book and the style used by Riley to supplement her Mom's tapes and to add in some very happy family times. She dealt with grief in such a compassionate and human way and conveyed the truth about the process. We all loved this family so we felt their sadness but Riley is real about the process and the hope that we must carry on while still carrying love for them. A page turning lovely portrayal of a family who really did love. ❤️

From Here to The Great Unknown.

utterly amazing book
lisa marie lived a sad life, growing up in the shadows of a person larger than life itself. the man who started it all. the first rock icon. roughly one third of the book covers her life in graceland and mentions the poor treatment of priscilla towards her. i think her was life full of tragedies, i couldn't help it but shed tears to the book as i was turning each page away. a. well written memoir. riley keough did her justice. may wherever lisa marie is now, i hope she's at peace.
