An affordable guide to drawing erotic characters -- why pay more?
This is another attempt to say what I mean about Lera Walker's terrific book! People have been paying plenty for expensive volumes that claim to teach how to draw erotic anime/manga art, but I find it hard to believe that such costly books would really be all that much better than Walker's reasonably priced work. She even includes a section specifically on drawing nude characters (she doesn't show genitalia, though, so I don't understand the need for an age-limit warning. Actually, all of Walker's characters look pretty erotic, whether under the nudes heading or not!

A Select Guide
If you want a quick rundown of my criteria and rating here they are:Instructional book: 4/5.Art: 5/5.Guided Tips: 4/5.How-To Sections: 3/5.The art in this book is phenomenal but the instructions are mostly given out in what I call “guided tips.” These “guided tips” are there to explain what’s going on but not necessarily to demonstrate the technique or thinking involved in the process. It’s more like a show-and-tell book, with a few sections that go into detail on how to get from point A to point B. It was a fairly sizeable book with 151 pages (149 of content not including the last 2 pages thanking the customer). Only 4 sections of this book are titled “Drawing” and the last one is the only one not to offer any “guided tips”. This is the section covering how to draw nudes, which seems a baffling choice to make considering that the other sections had similar material. If there are any concerns about potentially graphic content in this book, I think you can put those fears to rest. There is absolutely no genitalia shown, only how to think and draw when forming the pubic area in different postures, but never detailing the specifics, so if that’s what you’re looking for then you should probably find something else. This book is all about breasts and legs and plenty of it. The most detail how-to sections that I found were on three areas: heads, hands, and surprisingly breasts. I have included a few pictures to demonstrate. The section on how to draw nipples on a breast are covered on page 58, and for obvious reasons I will not show it. It is a short guide and one I wish would’ve been expanded on in other areas similar to how much time was spent on explaining and showing the steps involved in drawing the heads and hands. This book covers expressions a little, but has more pages devoted to different hairstyles and the flow of hair then detailing expressions. Most of the illustrations here are meant to be used as references and demonstrations, usually going from a rough sketch to a completed one.Nevertheless, for a $20 book and some change, I think that this is well worth the price. It’s not short, it’s not exhaustive, and it’s definitely not for beginners. Consider giving this a try if you have a grasp on basic anatomy. I think it would be alright for intermediates, but may be a bit of a breeze for more advanced students. I would recommend trying out Manga University’s, How to Draw the Female Figure first before you give this one a try. It is a great beginner book, with almost 200 pages of instruction, and it shows plenty of how-to steps and examples. Both of these books would work well together, so if you’ve mastered the lessons in the Manga University book, then consider Walker’s guide as a level up.
