Q: Does this come with a battery already inside?

It's capable of using 48v phantom power, but it also does come with a battery inside. Manual says it can also run on 24v phantom power if you physically remove the battery. When you look at the bottom of the DI box, there's a small Phillips screw. Remove it, and the inside slides out of the case. Inside, there's an epoxy block that securely holds a 9v battery. Mine came with an Energizer Max battery pre-installed.

Q: Am i right in saying the "Inst" jack is an input and the "amp" jack is a thru output that still goes into your amp?

Yes. I use this in the studio as a backup. My first choices are the 500 series CAPI vp28 or Neve portico but this holds pretty damn close in tone just not adjustable like modules. for catching DI. they rock!

Q: Will,this work ok with active pickups?

Yes , for some unknown reason SOME soundguys choose to use a passive DI with an active bass......that's a myth , I've worked for the big four sound companies and we always used Countryman and never had an issue . if your pickups are so powerful they overload the input just flip it into speaker and engage the pad ......I've never had to do that though .

Q: can I use both active and passive guitars on it?

This will work with guitars with active or passive pickups without any issues
