The default bitrate is 1.5 Mbps (for the mainstream, up to 2 Mbps)/160 kbps (for the substream, up to 512 kbps). With the default settings, if you preview in mainstream type about 3 minute per day (about 12-15 minutes in substream type per day), it needs 1GB monthly.

Q: I use Verizon. Is this compatible?

Q: Do you need to have an SD card in to set it up?

No, but it's highly recommend. I've had the camera fail to alert due to cellular issues but had video due to having an SD card. For the price of the cards these days, there is no reason not to get one
