Inexpensive, print server for 1 USB printer. But with a catch...
First and foremost the important stuff...1. Download and install the software from the Edimax website. It appears to be newer then what is on the included CD and it will actually find your print server.2. The print server's default IP is 192.168.2.2. I have never seen someone configure their router to work on 2.2 before. Normally it is 192.168.1.1 and is default for most USA ISP modems/gateways/routers. The Edimax MFP Manager software will see it but I couldn't get my Brother printer to work with it and I couldn't login to the print server's UI because of this. Also DHCP wasn't turned on so the IP is stuck at 192.168.2.2 until you can login to the UI and turn it on. This is a terrible setup and default should be DHCP not static. I even reset the print server thinking it had been previously configured that way but nope DHCP is turned off by default. So I had to connect the print server directly to my computer's ethernet port, configure my NIC to the 192.168.2.x scheme and then I could reach the UI by typing 192.168.2.2 in a web browser which then you can login using the default password admin/1234 and change to DHCP or change to a static IP respective to your home's IP scheme. So in a nutshell unless you have knowledge on how to do all that this will be a headache for you to setup.3. This Edimax print server is NOT wireless. It is wired only. The manual states it could be a wireless print server and there is a wireless version with an external antenna. However, this specific model is not wireless.4. It does not come with a USB cable.5. It does not come with an ethernet cable.6. It DOES come with a power cable. After you follow step 2 above and finally get the MFP Manager sofware from Edimax to see your print server on the right subnet you can connect to your print server directly using the MFP Manage which will automatically add your printer to your device and printer panel of your computer. And then you can print. Now, if you don't want to use the MFP Manager running in the background constantly in order to maintain the print server connection, you will have to add it manually via Windows Device and Printer section. Here are the steps...1. In Device and Printer section select "add printer."2. Select "My Printer isn't listed".3. Select "generic print server" or "printer server"4. Select your manufacturer and device model. If it is not listed click the button to search windows updates for more drivers. Then locate the brand and model of your printer.5. Save and print/test.Again, this is not for the faint of heart. Edimax could have made this very simple if they had enabled DHCP by default which then the IP of the print server would match your network's subnet when plugged in. But since it's not initially setup like that you have to go through a painful prerequisite setup unless I am missing something. Other then that the print server works great and has been working great for 1 day now. It sends the print very quickly just like using a direct USB cable unlike wireless which can sometimes take several seconds before the printer gets the print job. I am using this print server on an older Brother laser printer which still works perfectly but I need it to be accessible on the network for multiple users. This did the trick. It is definitely one of the most inexpensive print servers I have run into that has a recognizable name in the IT world.
