Everything a New Elementary School Teacher REALLY Needs to Know: (But Didn't Learn in College) (Free Spirit Professional®)

Harvard ed school, listen up!
OK, so no offense to the Harvard Graduate School of Education, which gave me my teaching degree, but maybe y'all should pay attention to what Otis Kriegel is saying here. With wit and wisdom, in normal non-education-jargon-speak, Kriegel cuts through the ed-school bullcrap to talk straight, teacher to teacher, about how to get the job done. I taught middle school and high school for 13 years, and I got this book for a relative who is entering the profession at the elementary level, and there's nothing in here I couldn't have said better myself. How to deal with parents (YES, Harvard, this is a BIG part of teaching!), how to deal with administrators good and bad (hello? What has a greater impact on your professional life than your principal?), how to make sure your field trip isn't a disaster, which direction to point your desk, etc, etc, etc. Veteran teachers would have killed for this book to exist sooner. But most of all, and most importantly: Kriegel talks right down to earth in a manner we can all easily understand about Why the Hell We Got Into This Profession Anyway, which is the beautiful thing that you want young teachers to hang on to, desperately. Sometimes the best idealism is straight-up practical knowledge and realism, because it lasts, and because it gets things done. But with every lesson infused with Kriegel's evident love of the art of teaching, the challenges and wonders of children, and the seriousness plus joy of the classroom, ENESTRNTK(bdlc) delivers an inspirational manifesto right when cynicism about education is at its highest. Take it from an old-school vet, kids: Don't leave ed school without this book.

where was this book when i was teaching
Everything a new Elementary School Teacher REALLY needs to Know is revealed in Otis Kriegel's latest book. I wish I had read this book when i started teaching first grade a few years ago. This is clearly a book from a veteran school teacher - but more than a veteran it is a book by someone who teaches with passion and heart and knows the hearts and minds of the kids in the classroom. This book will make any new teacher's first year a breeze and make any veteran teachers life much more easeful, regardless of the composition of the class.I am going to take a copy of this book to all the elementary school offices in my town - that numbers 8! I am also giving this book to all my friends who teach as well as some copies to the superintendant's office. It is not my customary practice to purchase multiple copies of books but this is a book i want to see get into the hands of all teachers. Too many good teachers are leaving the system today and this book will help people find a way to stay and to stay in a deeply effective way.Otis has written a gem of a handbook and it is a gift to the field of education.

Full of useful info!!
As a person nervous to go into their first year of teaching this book goes over those small details that I forgot or didn’t even know I needed to think about for setting up and maintaining an orderly classroom. I’ll be reading this book before starting my first year and I’m sure I’ll be referencing it frequently throughout my career.

A Must Need for an Education Library
As a graduate student in Teacher Education, I need all the advice I can get when it comes to teaching. This book doesn't beat around the bush and gives the information to me straight. It also talks down to a level in which everyone can understand, a plus in my book. Just a warning to those who do decide to purchase it: the book is hard to put down once you start reading it. It is that engaging. I highly recommend it to future educators everywhere.

Where's the app for this book???!!!
Or maybe a wristwatch!!! Something that has all of this book's brilliantly practical and effective tips at the ready, keeping ALL elementary teachers -- new AND old -- forever prepared as they do battle in the chalk-dust and rubber-cement trenches.I've ordered a few more copies -- is spring too early for stocking-stuffers? -- for some friends and extended family members who teach. This isn't just a game plan for more effective teaching, it's sort of a survival guide for happier teachers!

Just OK, for me.
The booklet is ok for me because I'm already a teacher. I do not agree that 226 pages have everything an elementary teacher needs to know, but for a teacher to be this book can give you a hint into some of the things you can expect to happen when you are on the field. With that said, I recommend this book to first year teachers to be and collage students who are planing on taking a teaching carrier, this could help them open their eyes to some of the school realities and give them some possible solutions.
