Good shower base but be VERY CAREFUL when installing. It's pretty fragile.

The product seems OK, but that packaging is insufficient. The unit arrives in a cardboard box with only 4 additional slim cardboard corner right-angle pieces to secure and cushion the base. Just replacing those with some more substantial Styrofoam corner blocks would protect so much better against damage. They replaced the 1st one because it arrived with structural damage, which I photographed and e-mailed them. The second one also arrived with damage, only cosmetic, not structural. I accepted the 2nd unit after they gave me a partial refund.

I use these all the time, I'm a remodel contractor.The whole secret to these is the proper under support.you need to lay down a bed of mortar or sand mix to floor before putting it in, this gives support and helps to level unit. Some guys don't do this to speed up the job.Doing that there's always a chance of a little shift or movement and that what could cause a Leak.a lot of houses the plywood under-layment maybe a little spongy or week this helps that problem also.Also using flashing around perimeter behind sheathing to in front of flange makes a huge difference too.I recommend never to use drywall of ANY kind behind the tile, always use a tile backer board.

I purchased the Mustee 36x36 receptor and Model 736 Shower walls from Homedepot. They were installed 10/16/01 by contractors who have been doing plumbing and construction for 30 years. In the following 6 years I've had 3 leaks and had to do major repairs to the surrounding drywall and resealing of the shower on all three occassions.The design is not very good and the front edges of the joint between the walls and the base depend on a seal that is difficult to create and is prone to rapid deterioration. Water seeps out from the front of base/wall joint and gradually destroys the wallboard and trim near the shower. I found Mustee support to be non-existant. None of the documents that I received contained any contact information other than their address in Cleveland. They seem to take the position that once you pay for it then its up to you and the contractor to make it work.I had thought that this would be a once in a life-time project, but I'm now planning for the replacement of Mustee product.I will probably go with a custom shower from a local company that specializes in custom bath products, but there are a number of well known brands (including one from a major faucet manufacturer) which friends have purchased and which have been trouble free for many years. I would look to one of those other alternatives before considering a Mustee product.
