So You Want to be a Mud Engineer: An Introduction to Drilling Fluids Technology

First of all let me say that I have NEVER taken the time to write a review on ANYTHING I have ever purchased, but found myself compelled to share this review with prospective Mud Engineers.I am a recent graduate of a private Mud School ..DFE Tech in Tyler Tx..The education I received was excellent and I would recommend this School to anyone wanting to enter the field...However, after such a quick intensive course, I found myself reaching out for educational materials to help "Clarify" and "Fill in the Gaps" of things I was a little unsure of...This book was such a great source of knowledge...It is basic in a lot of ways ,but ties together many aspects of what I learned in Mud School...It does NOT overwhelm the student with a lot of unnecessary information on the detailed formulas that are not applicable for a career in Mud Engineering, but is extremely readable for the novice entering the field. I am a Biology and Chemistry Major and still found the book very helpful. It will stay in my Company Vehicle as a quick reference ..I gained employment with Halliburton approximately six months after graduating Mud School at DFE TECH and have served as a private tutor to students attending DFE TECH ...I also purchased the "Drilling Fluids Processing Handbook" and "Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids" These books can be helpful and I would certainly purchase them again if money were not an issue, but I found myself "reading between the lines" regarding formulas that were completely irrelevant for doing your job as a competent Mud Engineer. The total I spent on these two books was $267.64 vs $59 for "So you want to be a Mud Engineer" If you are a recent Mud School Graduate or considering a career as a Mud Engineer, this book is worth its weight in gold and I highly recommend it!

I am a ten year mud engineer, and am now a mud school instructor. I went through the authors school years ago. I can say that this book imparts not only useful information about mud, and mud engineering, but it also communicates a tried and true method and theory about HOW to be a mud engineer. The author is very skilled at communicating the formulas and chemistry necessary for mud engineers. He also includes several useful chapters about the realities of the job, and the skills and attitude necessary to be effective in the field. I encourage each student in my school to purchase the book, and frequently quote from it in my school. I could not recommend this book more highly, as it is the most concise and useful text for those who want to be or are beginning mud engineers. (And even for some of the experienced ones).

A great book for anybody who has strong interest or even curiosity of becoming a mud engineer. The author Andy Philips first hand perspective of the job and all the other things that come with it is what i was looking for. For some one like me who wondered about the mathematics and the chemistry of being a mud engineer the author does a great job. And when someone states,"No one comes out of mud school a trained mud engineer" indicates his sincerity and pride in his profession. With the way some schools sell their product, its good to hear its not always that easy. Also good info on the politics and atmosphere of the people you would be working with.

This book definitely provides introductory insight into the drilling fluids sect of the oil and gas industry. Drilling mud is one of the most costly parameters in oil and gas drilling, and usually entails a conglomeration of knowledge including: physics, chemistry, math, manufacturing, etc. This book manages to sum up many of the basic concepts needed to understand the function and purpose of drilling fluid and conveys how mud is used in the field.Four star review for some editing oversight and a good amount of typos, however hopefully these are fixed in newer iterations.

I purchased this book because I was a green pea to the oil field entirely. I knew nothing about being a Mud Engineer but wanted to make a career change and work as a Mud Engineer in the oil field. I will tell you that this book was great and has great information to get you started. It will educate you on what you need to know and what to expect before going into mud school. I got the book to study before going into mud school and I highly recommend it to anyone doing the same!Money well spent!

So You Want to be a Mud Engineer does a fantastic job in giving an overall description of what a mud engineer does. For someone new to the industry it is invaluable knowledge. If you are considering going to mud school and would like a better understanding about the business before you arrive then buy the book.

This book is useless and the price should be not more than 15$ .Don't purchase it. beacuse it will losse your time and your money.

I bought this book as a primer to mud engineering. It is almost mud school in a book... It does lack the exact procedures of testing Pm, Pf, Mf, but if you read this book prior to going into mud school you'll shoot through it with ease.

Having attended a mud school over 30 years ago, and been a mud engineer ever since, and felt my head was about to explode in the school, this book is excellent in that it cuts to the chase. Cuts out all the lengthy chemical equations etc.and gets straight to the point.My only reservation is that it appears to be geared to the US drilling fluids business. I've worked the North Sea, The Middle East, S. East Asia and Oceania and find the advice as to how to conduct one's self a little hard to swallow.
