Great for Art Projects--Poor For Anything Else
This thin trade paperback has some merits. If you are an artsy person, it contains nicely drawn heiroglyphics at a large size that makes it easy to learn to duplicate the finer details. It combines them to form some simple words like "daughter, water, to attack, to fly, war, enemy" to give your art some true meaning. As a art book, as a "how to draw heiroglyphics convincingly" I give the book 4 stars. As a manual for learning how to read them? I give it 1 star. The scholar will find little of use in this book. There is an incredibly limited vocabulary provided and almost no information on the actual writing process (grammar, orientation, phonetic transcription). The word bank covered would only take a chapter of time in a more indepth book. (Try Mark Colliers' How to Read Egyptian Heiroglyphics A Step By Step for a good teach yourself to read manual.)If you are looking for well done examples of heiroglyphics for art purposes, this is a useful book. If you wish to expand your knowledge in the reading and writing of heiroglyphics you will be terribly disappointed at the waste of money.

Better For The Information Than Its Artsy Hieroglyphics
This book does give very nice information at the beginning about the classification of Egyptian hieroglyphics which will come in handy to know, and it is given in layman's terms. The problem is that the hieroglyphics are drawn in such an artsy way. Though attractive, it isn't really how they were drawn in papyri or on walls. Sometimes it can be hard to recognize signs for this reason. I found it useful to have a book of Budge's (yes, I know he is outdated, but he is also good about having lists of characters that are drawn in recognizable ways) to go with this book.If you have a kid that is interested in hieroglyphics, and you don't want to spend a lot of money yet because you suspect it is a passing craze, this is a perfect book for them. It is a nice resource for people who have Budge's books because it gives more updated information but is inexpensive. For the true student, though, they may prefer something else.

It’s amazing what was able to be pieced together from the Rosetta Stone
It’s amazing what was able to be pieced together from the Rosetta Stone: Monoliterals, Biliterals, Triliterals, Phonetic Signs, Ideograms, Determinative Signs, Cartouches, etc. And most of us still have trouble with Effect and Affect. I could wish that the material was formatted and presented differently. The editors at Dover took a lot of liberties, and in my opinion they did not improve this book. They instead made it harder to follow. For instance, they would throw a random drawing into a blank space. It did give me a general idea of things though, so my time wasn’t entirely wasted.

Great as a skill builder. Highly recommended.
This is a great book for a beginner. It goes beyond merely learning the alphabet. The author includes 30 monoliterals, 80 biliterals, 27 trilitorals and 180 determinants. The book also includes 343 vocabulary words including nouns, names, verbs and adjectives,This makes for a wonderful foundation before starting to study grammar. The glyphs are large and artistic. The author also includes a list at the end describing what each glyph represents. This was my second book on Egyptian Hieroglyphs. I wish I had started with this one.I highly recommend it!

TAKES THE BISCUIT
For over 70 years I've been fascinated by the world of Ancient Egypt. Now in retirement I've set out to learn how to read Hieroglyphics and I couldn't have chosen a better guide. Already I was well seasoned by books by Wallis Budge and the more detailed work by Collier & Manley; but in 95 pages this book made it fit together with its clear illustrations and its patient examination of how a language served for 8 centuries, was lost, rediscovered and now helps us FULLY appreciate the products of an amazing civilisation.Well worth 5 stars

A new product !
Glue smeared on front cover, looked like someone tried to clean it off unsuccessfully. Some useful pages on writing hieroglyphic characters but not as comprehensive as I would have liked.
