Adds awareness and framework to thinking
This books is great for aspiring or current engineers along with people from other disciplines. This book is great in helping to describe a manner of thinking. The goal is to expose the audience into a manner of thinking and the beauty of this book is the broad and structured approach. Professor Al-Atabi spends time discussing the brain physiology, growth mindset, learning, emotional intelligence all of which help increase someone's self-awareness. Regardless of your field, this is a beneficial attribute to have. Furthermore, the CDIO framework presented allows for a structured manner of thinking when problems come your way. In fact, as the author makes a point, they are no longer problems, as much as opportunities for you to solve.

An excellent read that encourages people to think in a systematic, process oriented approach. Such an approach will help resolving big issues by transforming them to their smaller components. A very positive book from a very positive author.

Good Read For Student Wanting An Introduction to Engineering With Cavets
There is a lot of information in the book on thinking like an engineer and solving problems. That said it is heavily weighted down with the number of personal stories of people around the world that either got an engineering degree and are doing other things like teaching or who had a depressing or tragic life and found engineering that gave them focus. The stories are way to deep for the causal reader wanting to stay on target which is engineering.I must also say that this book though in British English focuses on Malaysia and the Far East. It does cover the problem solving methods engineering and quality control comes across. The methods can also be used to improve your personal life and use failure as a method of feedback and not an end onto itself. The school is also heavily promoted not quote to the level of an infomercial but close.

By Mick McManus, University of Queensland, Australia
I really enjoyed the read and more importantly the approach Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi has taken to enlighten young engineers. It has certainly captured the attention of a greying scientist and the book is an ideal read not only for undergraduate engineering students but for all undergraduates. The CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate) approach used by engineers is applicable across the education divide and Mushtak presents this in a friendly and easily readable format. He has taken time to introduce the reader to the relatively uncharted water of how people learn in a way that should encourage students to build on exploring this fascinating area. The fact he also highlights failure as an important process in the learning cycle is refreshing as we have become experts in modern universities in developing mindless technocrats that have the street smart gene deleted. The emotional intelligence part of the book also resonates with this observation. An understanding of the CDIO process is critical for all disciplines and this book provides students with an insight into how the world needs to function.
