Lovecraftian Fun
For a fan of Lovecraft, this game was a joy to play. It manages to weave in so many references from the mythos while always giving its own unique take on them. The enemies are suitably creepy and unnerving and leveling up your skills feels very satisfying. What I really loved though, is the story and the main character of Charles Reed. You are given interesting decisions to make though most of the time they don't have too much impact on what comes next - that's actually a plus for me as I was able to make the choices I wanted rather than picking the optimal paths for maximum results. The world is masterful and I could imagine a more suitable setting for a Lovecraft tale - you can practically smell the rotting fish, mold and smoke.

Great game! Huge map, excellent storyline. The game is an investigation thriller and it excites.

Enjoyable, albeit a bit buggy, worth to add to collection
Product is not longer available as an electronic copy, thus buying it now as a physical disc is worth it. I personally got it as a gift for someone but from what I heard back it seems to be an ambient, interesting story, and world. Some of the game features are lacking and or on the fritz, but still an overall enjoyable game. Perfect for fans of monsters and mystery.

Buggy And Vacant, But Has A Lot Of Heart
There's the core of a really interesting game in Sinking City. It's a lovecraftian detective story, but instead of leaning on fishmen = scary, it mixes up the formula a bit by having mythos-touched factions be mostly just people---albeit people with weird powers. There's pre-human mages, fish people, cultists, etc, and you can talk and interact with them without your sanity bleeding out your ears.Likewise, the setting is fun. It's essentially half-flooded boston, where the streets are a twisting jumble and wide sections of the city are completely untraversable by car. So, basically like regular boston.Unfortunately, this is where the budget runs out.Sinking City tries to do some cool things by making you manually map your objectives, and having you manually research and collate information to solve cases, but the game is clunky and intuitive and its map system will 100% forget which nondescript samey courtyard an important npc is in if you don't leave a map pin there, even if you're in the middle of one of their quests. Likewise, you can't always tell when you've resolved an objective---especially on one of the bigger, game-spanning sidequests. The game doesn't communicate well with you, and it's deeply inaccessible and janky when it does.Combat is similarly lackadaisical. In some areas of the city, mobs of creatures generate. They kind of just amble towards you like you're in an mmo, and part of me wonders if this was maybe an mmo that got salvaged into a singleplayer game. Anyway, combat balance is...not, and you're supposed to mostly avoid fights until you've built up enough exp to have the right stat numbers. There's also bugs, and I nearly bricked my playthrough right off the start by walking outside of where the game thought I'd be able to get to. To compound this, the tutorialing is genuinely bad, and doesn't always tell (or even give you the means to find out) how to do something that's essential to progress. If you have a lot of patience for games and you want to see something do the lovecraft formula in a relatively fresh way, get this cheap and play it carefully. Otherwise, it is not a polished experience, and you may want to check out the more recent Call Of Cthulhu game instead.

Amazing.
Bar none the best game I've played all decade. As a big fan of Lovecraftian horror, there's some subjectivity to my view but I think everyone should give it a shot. It's a bit like fallout 3, except with a less flushed out world but a far far more intriguing story. I will be following this series closely.
