Q: Could I get away with using just one unit? If i just buy the add-on pack instead the standard 2 pack

There would be no point in having a one box mesh Wi-Fi system as the first box takes over from your router and is not in addition to it. Hence you need two or more boxes to increase your coverage, which is the whole point of having a mesh system.

Q: I use linksys wrt ac 1900s will this mesh system take over the control of all my devices? parental control etc?

It will plug into your Linksys then create a separate network which you can name and control. Parental controls are an option, but will not be carried over, you will have to set them up. Hope this helps?

Q: Can I plug this into a booster that gets a full signal from my main modem

That is not what it is really for. One of these should be connected to the router directly by a network cable. It will then serve as the primary mode and other subsequent nodes will be served by that. Connecting to a booster is not a very good idea.

Q: Does the first node have to stay permanently attached to the router with the Ethernet cable?

Yes , I have a virgin router, connected via a Ethernet cable to my first mesh box, this sends the signal to the next / others. Still have the Wi-Fi on the virgin on still let the kids use that and the mesh for the adults. Tv in main room I have another mesh box connected via Ethernet as well for ease, great little box’s easy to set up via phone app,
