An expedition in search of an editor
If you’re seeking a brief summary of the Lewis and Clark expedition and don’t mind several editing errors, this book will suffice. Written in textbook fashion with an emphasis on facts rather than sparkling prose, this short volume documents the journey but conveys little of its drama. The book would have benefited from better editing. Several word choices seemed odd. The most unintentionally humorous one occurred when a participant in the expedition “died of cholera twenty years late.” Should he, in the author’s opinion, have died two decades earlier? More likely the word should have been ‘later.’Still, if you’re unfamiliar with the expedition and want a short, easy-to-read, bare-bones, fact-based description, this might be the book for you.

GOT WHAT?
• The story was moving as the explorers.• As in the Conclusion: But in many respects, the Corps failed to learn their relationship with the natives.• Sexually transmitted diseases / “venereal diseases, brought on by exhaustion and poor diet.” Really! Or: GOT traditional virtue?• The Blackfeet’s robbery incident took two human lives. GOT a rifle for two people?• Honor human life from conception to natural death … GOT virtue?

Into the Unknown, Back with Treasures of Discovery
At 4&1/2 stars, this short accounting of Lewis and Clark and their expedition is pretty well written, with the exception of a few typos that tend to distract from the narrative. I think the best thing I take away from this story-line is the personalization of the peoples involved. Learning that this group of 40 people formed a type of family bond and even practiced a form of democracy was a new revelation for me, or I did not remember those details from reading oh so many years before. Through trials and tribulations the expedition was an over-all astounding success. Sadly, it ended badly for a couple of the people involved, that of one early in the adventure and that of one of the named expedition leaders, Lewis. This was America boldly going to places seemingly never explored before.

Great quick read of Lewis & Clark!
Not knowing much about the Lewis & Clark travels, this book supplied a great deal of information in a very readable format. Really captured the feeling of traveling the “unknown territory” and the ruggedness of the Corp of Discovery team. Very much enjoyed this book.

Falsifies History
This book falsifies the beneficient role of Clark and the Indian tribes when he became governor of Missouri. He broke every treat he made with the tribes. He was also a cruel slavemaster who punished York for wanting to rejoin his wife and children. This book should be recalled immediately.

Great Adventure!
Excellent read. Found one mistake with a date. In chapter 9, the year 1906 is mentioned. Obviously the year was 1806. Overall a very factual book that explains the triumphant Lewis and Clark expedition.
