Excellent Resource!
This is a simple, yet concise way to teach reading. I agree with one of the previous reviews in that experienced teachers might not need this book, but it's an invaluable resource for preservice and novice teachers. The authors explain the five components of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics/word study, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, and offer several good mini-lesson ideas for each of them. Chapters are an easy-read (about 18 pages each). The font size isn't small like many books I've read, and the layout of the book is great for quick reading.I've been teaching for 7 years. I recently graduated with a Master's degree in Reading, and I'll be taking my Reading Specialist test next month. This book has been seated on my shelf for a couple of years. I never really read it; just glanced at it. I have to say that now that I'm reviewing for my test, I feel refreshed with all the information I got from this book. It's a great refresher and a good book that helps to build the foundations for those who don't teach in the primary grades. I focused especially on the phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency chapters, and I have to say that I had never felt so prepared.Beginning and pre-service teachers, get this book. You won't regret. If I was a college professor, I would make this a required text for the undergraduate courses in reading and/or literacy.

Late
This product arrived at my house late and because I had already gone back to college, I had to wait two weeks before I could open it. It was new like they promised and still in its plastic wrap, but their packaging wasn't very good - just a paperbag taped around the product.

Research shows better ways to improve reading skills...
As a reading tutor (but not trained as a reading teacher), I'm finding this book extremely helpful. Excellent information and ideas to keep children interested; recommendations according to research on better ways to get improvement; chart and statistics for evaluating the progress of students. Especially good ideas for helping approximately grades 2 - 4.

Love it!
Love it! This is a constant go-to book for reference for me; I love the way it is organized and its value on research based methods. Would love to see a new updated edition that would incorporate the common core standards.

Researched Methods of Reading Instruction
Maybe if you're a seasoned reading teacher you don't need this book, however I found it has some good information in it that I could and do use in the classroom. The book was also used in my research paper on phonemic awareness. It's a keeper for me.
