Q: Will this work with 8 gauge wire ?

The supplied connectors are designed for 12/3 SJ through 8/5 S cables with a diameter .50" to .875" (other diameters are available from the manufacturer. Yes 8 gauge will work fine.

Q: L14-30 plug. how do i calculate total watt draw? amp measure for red lead - 17, black 1.18, white 13.75. i'm confused as to what watts this is drawing

red and black are hot leds . White is neutral , green is ground . check you circuit breaker for the rating . you can have a 220-240 appliance on it or two separate legs of 110-120 try to balance the load so each line has a even draw . Not sure if this answers your question ?

Q: Should I just connect the two grounds together if cord is three wire ?

This plug Should be wired with 2 hot leads to get220 volts. Two 110 volt leads. That's the two leads from a two pole breaker. Then one common white wire , and one ground green wire. If you have only three wires get a plug with three prongs to have it hooked up to code. If your breaker box has the grounds and common bonded together you might get it to work. If they are separate and not bonded together you might have a problem. I'm Not a Electrician ,my opinion only. Don't know what purpose you are using this for. If it's a generator It must be a 4 wire plug. and must have the proper wire 4 wires.
