If the battery in question is the same physical size as the standard 6-V lantern battery, it should work. If you use rechargeable D-size batteries in this adaptor, it may even recharge.

Q: Does the top center spring -ve? if so, is it easy to reverse every d-cell and get center +ve ?

THE ADAPTER USES 4 D-CELLS. THERE IS A CENTER SPRING AND A CORNER SPRING ON TOP TO MATCH THE FULL SIZE 6V. IT HAS A SMALL COMPARTMENT FIR SPARE BULBS. SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO THE FULL SIZE 6V.

I don't know what you mean by "larger 6v rectangular battery". This adapter allows you to use 4 "D" cell batteries in place of what I have always known as a standard 6v lantern battery. A "standard 6v lantern battery" measures 2.5" square at the base and 3 3/4" tall, not counting the two spring contacts.
